Mother-daughter research team compares COVID-19 to previous pandemics in new book
What has society learned from pandemics over the centuries? Among other things, the importance of public health measures, of how viruses can mutate and the role of vaccines. The topic is discussed by a physician with a public health background who teamed up with her daughter, a historian of science and medicine, to write the book “Viral Pandemics: From Smallpox to COVID-19.” Rae-Ellen Kavey, MD, is a pediatric cardiologist who earlier in her career was part of the Upstate Medical University faculty. Her daughter, Allison Kavey, PhD, is a professor in the history department and graduate center at the City University of New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
