If your child is hospitalized, a team of medical professionals will be involved in his or her care, including a child life specialist. Gina Lozito, the child life manager at the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, explains the role of these specialists. They're stationed throughout the hospital, so they can be available in inpatient rooms, the emergency department, operating rooms and radiology and outpatient offices. They help relieve stress by building rapport with children and help children and their families understand what's happening medically. Lozito explains the educational requirements for child life specialists, who must complete a 600-hour internship in their final semester.
