Compounds derived from marijuana are not magic pain relievers, but they might relieve some of the stress or anxiety related to pain, according to research conducted by a psychology doctoral student at Syracuse University. Martin De Vita's work, described as the first systematic review of experimental research on the effects of cannabis on pain, was published in the American Medical Association Journal JAMA Psychology. De Vita discusses cannabinoids, the chemical compounds in marijuana that provide its medicinal and recreational properties. Two of the hundreds of cannabinoids people may have heard of include THC, the component that creates the high, and CBD, which has been looked to for relief of pain, anxiety and some movement disorders. For people looking at CBD products to relieve their pain, De Vita says to "calibrate your expectations" and notes that CBD products are not well regulated.
