RESEARCH ABSTRACT

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction - Trans-tibial vs Infero-medial Portal Technique for Femoral Tunnel Placement. Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee are common, often debilitating injuries. These injuries often require surgical reconstruction. The goal of the surgery is to restore functional stability to the knee. In order to achieve this goal and provide a durable reconstruction over the long-term, it is imperative to position the new ligament correctly within the knee. A number of techniques have been described. Traditionally, the trans-tibial drilling of the femoral tunnel has been used. We are currently studying the use of an accessory infero-medial skin postal used to drill the femoral tunnel. The two techniques are being prospectively compared with regard to restoration of functional stability, patient satisfaction, and consistency of femoral tunnel positioning.
