"Treatment Choice for Children with Cancer: Integrating the Concept of Family Healing"

Amy Caruso Brown, MD, MSc

Many medical anthropologists approach healing as a family- and community-oriented process, in which physical cure is not the only or even the primary goal. Western physicians and other biomedical practitioners often struggle with supporting and guiding families of children with cancer when the prognosis becomes terminal. Through a novel model of treatment choice and sample cases, Dr. Caruso Brown will explore whether families and providers alike can benefit from restructuring their viewpoints to align more closely with traditional healing practices by acknowledging the family as a psychosocial whole.

Amy Caruso Brown, MD, is a Fellow in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Colorado Denver (Anschutz Medical Campus). She received her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and Master of Science in Medical Anthropology from the University of Oxford.

Lunch will be provided and available at 11:45.
