Title: Treatments for autism spectrum disorders. A review of the literature and case examples.

As public awareness of autism grows, so does the myriad of treatments available for this disorder. A recent analysis (Odom et al., 2014) identified 27 different treatments that met criteria as an “evidence-based treatment” for autism – an increase of 3 new procedures that had not previously met that distinction in earlier reviews (NAC, 2007). Despite several such analysis that have identified evidence-based practices, providers and caregivers are often exposed to “alternative” forms of therapy. The current talk will review the most recent data on evidence-based practices for autism. Next, alterative interventions will be discussed. Finally, case examples demonstrating the assessment of alternative interventions will be presented. The results will be discussed in terms of how one might apply basic assumptions of science to examine the efficacy of interventions for autism.
