The Naomi Chernoff, MD Creativity Conference - Inner Theaters/Outer Screens: Film as Process, Representation and Reflection

The Psychotherapist's Guide to Cinema: Uncovering the therapeutic eye of the screen

Georgian Mustata, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY

This overture to our conference aims to identify in the virtual reality of film watching, elements at play in the experience of psychotherapy. Equally, it hopes to lay the ground for a subsequent development translating in therapy the inner reaching power of film experience, its capacity to represent, speak to and transfigure the latent powers of mind.

The speaker shall direct focus to both the visible and invisible components of the film experience themes that span the diegetic space and processes that weave spectator and screen together.

The audience will enter a personalized experience of film watching written as performance and confession. Works of Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antoioni, Andrei Tarkovsky and others are offered as example for enduring cinematic themes - violence, love, the return of the hero, sacrifice and friendship, and pervasive processes common to film and psychotherapy - gaze, desire, transference, association, symbolformation, and interpretation.

The richness of themes and processes common to all the therapies not withstanding, it takes something more for them to heal. It takes a person. The presenter will muse on what fundamental ingredients turn a person into a therapist or give life changing powers to the screen.

Dr. Mustata does not have financial relationships with commercial interests.
