The term 'relationship-centered care' was introduced in 1994 in a white paper on the education of health professionals in the 21st century. In this grand rounds, we will explore the definition of relationship-centered care and its intellectual provenance; what it means for patient care (at the level of the clinical encounter and the healthcare system); and what it will take to implement it.
