SUMMARY:Psychiatry Grand Rounds
DESCRIPTION:
Long-term Dynamic Improvement and Recovery in
 Borderline Personality Disorder: Defenses, Motives,
 Conflicts\n
 \n
 J. Christopher Perry, MPH,
MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Director of Psychotherapy
 Research Institute of Community
& Family Psychiatry, S.M.B.D. Jewish General
 Hospital, Montreal, QC\n
 \n
 Controlled Treatment
trials of BPD are typically shorter than two
years and demonstrate significant but small
 improvements over treatment and/or follow-up.
These studies generally do not examine whether
 the patients psychodynamically improve or
recover and, in particular the length of time
 required for recovery. This presentation
examines defenses, motives (arranged in Erikson's
 developmental framework) and conflicts in
BPD and examines how much they change over
long-term follow-up. In addition the presentation
will determine whether BPD patients improve
at a similar rate as non-BPD patients, and
whether any patients with BPD attain dynamic
 recovery and healthy functioning. \n
