The following is the process in which you can become a New York State University Police Officer at Upstate Medical University. This is also the process that most University Police Departments use.

You must take (and pass) the NYS Civil Service exam for NYS University Police Officer (UPO 1). Here is the upcoming exam list.

Then you must pass:

• Physical agility test
• Application and Interview process
• Medical Exam
• Psychological exam
• Background check

Having passed all of the above and being accepted into the department you will then be expected to complete the following:

• Police Academy
• Field Training Program
• 18 month probationary period
