PSYCHIATRIC Services

The Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, at University Hospital, consists of 23 beds, admitting individuals age 17 and over for treatment of various psychiatric diagnoses. Patients are admitted to the unit on both a voluntary and an involuntary status and the repuatation of the unit brings referrals from a variety of sources all over central New York. Patients with complex diagnostic or management problems are referred to University Hospital for more comprehensive treatment. Within our richly diverse patient population, the multidisciplinary staff provide an atmosphere of acceptance, caring, and respect.

Collaboration

Psychiatric nursing practice provides a multifaceted approach that emphasizes individualized care in an interactive therapeutic milieu. The nursing staff are an integral part of the interdisciplinary treatment team and collaborate with other health care professionals to provide quality patient care in an evidence based practice environment.

Therapeutic Relationship

Primary nursing is practiced with the belief that the therapeutic relationship has the potential to produce change and growth within the individual. Nurses assist patients with self-understanding in an atmosphere of trust, caring and acceptance. Patients are offered an individualized plan of care including individual and group therapy with a strong emphasis on skill-development through psychoeducational programming. The treatment team believes that a family centered approach to care is important to improving our patient's mental health.

Advocacy and Education

In an active teaching environment, nursing provides ongoing education tailored to the needs of the individual patient and family. Nursing functions as a patient and family advocate emphasizing community reintegration
