Both her mom and I were good matches but I knew that I needed to give my kidney to Ashley so that her mother could care for her and her older brother while we were both recuperating from the transplant operations.”–Phillip

12-year-old University Hospital patient Ashley with her father, Phillip, who donated his kidney to her in the summer of 1999. Ashley had kidney failure as a result of complications from lupus which she contracted at age 5.
 “My transplant gave me a second chance at life. I’m stronger, feel better, and can do more. I was diagnosed with diabetes at age four and on dialysis by the time I was 35. Now, thanks to my transplant, I can do more for my family and am looking forward to going back to teaching. I am truly blessed.
I am so grateful to my donor’s family for their gift. And, I understand that they find comfort from the knowledge that their decision not only saved my life, but saved the lives of several other people.”

In 1995, Abe of Watertown, New York, donated a kidney to his son, Rich, at University Hospital.
