Clinical Trial—Northstar Neuroscience

Everest: The Stroke Rehabilitation Study of Hand/Arm Function

Do you have weakness in your hand/arm due to a stroke?

The Northstar Stroke Recovery Treatment System delivers electrical stimulation to the outer layer of the brain—the cortex—in the area that is responsible for arm and hand movement

Study Criteria

You may be eligible to participate if:

  • Are over 21 years of age.
  • Have experienced an ischemic (“clotting”) stroke at least 4 months ago.
  • Can partially move the affected hand/arm.

Stroke survivors with complete paralysis on one side are excluded from the current study.

  • Are willing to attend daily rehabilitation sessions for 6 weeks.

Study Purpose

The EVEREST study is designed to evaluate the Northstar Stroke Recovery treatment System to determine the safety and effectiveness of an implanted device* in treating patients who have reduced hand and/or arm function after a stroke.

Completed human studies on a limited number of patients suggests that this investigational therapy is safe and that brain stimulation can improve arm/hand recovery in stroke survivors, even when the stroke occurred months or years earlier.

* Caution: Investigational device. Limited by Federal (or United States) law to investigational use.
