Our Parentage Testing Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Accreditation follows a review of laboratory policies and procedures, and establishes that the level of technical and administrative performance meets or exceeds AABB standards. Of the fifty facilities across the US that perform 99% of all parentage testing, the SUNY Health Science Center is the only AABB accredited service in New York State.

Cytogenetics

The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a full service lab offering karyotype analysis on cells cultured from the following specimen types: amniotic fluid, bone marrow, peripheral blood, and tissue. Specialized studies, including high resolution analysis and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization), allow detection of microdeletions and other cryptic chromosome anomalies.

Electron Microscopic Pathology

The Electron Microscopy Section is home to a Philips 300 transmission electron microscope, a Jeol 100 SX transmission electron microscope, and an Hitachi 520 scanning electron microscope with a PGT X-ray analysis system. Our facilities include three darkrooms and one processing laboratory with all ancillary equipment.

Hematology/Hematopathology/Special Hematopathology

Our laboratory offers comprehensive services in hematology, including peripheral blood analysis in our core clinical laboratory, morphologic studies of peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymhoid tissues, immunophenotyping, hemostasis and thrombosis evaluation, and red blood cell studies. We also coordinate closely with Anatomic Pathology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics laboratories to provide a full range of diagnostic services.

Immunology/Immunopathology

Comprehensive immunological and serological procedures are performed daily. Routine studies include HIV-1 antibody, HTLV-1 antibody, and Hepatitis A, B, & C profiles. More specialized testing includes flow cytometric analyses (Lymphocyte subsets, ie, CD4 counts, lymphocyte typing for malignancies, stem cell enumeration, DNA ploidy), prenatal testing for neural tube defects and Down's syndrome - Triple test - Alpha fetoprote in (AFP), organ donor serology services, anti-neutrophil, cytoplasmic antibody, and antibody assessment for employment immunization.

Molecular Pathology

The Special Procedures Laboratory, in the Division of Anatomic Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University is a Joint Commission accredited clinical diagnostic facility which offers a growing menu of molecular testing on solid tumors. The laboratory is currently the only laboratory with NYS approval for a variety of molecular tests. The laboratory performs PCR, RT-PCR, FISH and CISH for adult and pediatric neoplasms including various soft tissue tumors, carcinomas and brain tumors. In addition to serving the Upstate Medical University community we are also a referral laboratory for other hospitals and clinics.

The Division of Anatomic Pathology offers diagnostic expertise and consultative services in general surgical pathology as well as a variety of subspeciality are as including gynecologic, pediatric, breast, urologic, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, environmental/occupational pathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, ophthalmic pathology, cytopathology, and renal pathology. Immunohistochemistries, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and other departmental services provide support to obtain simple and complex diagnostic interpretations as required.
