The Gamma Knife Team
Treatment with the Gamma Knife is planned and administered by a multidisciplinary team of specialists including:
- Neurosurgeons
- Radiation Oncologists
- Medical Physicists
- Neuroimaging Specialists
- Nursing Staff
The Central New York Gamma Knife Center's team attended an intensive two-week training session in Sweden before the center opened its doors.
Referring Physician Role
The referring physician is a critical partner on the Gamma Knife treatment team. All follow-up studies, treatment plans and progress outcomes are performed in conjunction with the patient's physician. Because the patient often requires long-term follow-up care, it is essential that the referring physician and Gamma Knife team maintain a close working relationship.
Nursing Staff (at University Hospital)
The Nursing staff are essential members of the Gamma Knife Team. The Gamma Knife's RN staff are dedicated to meet the individual needs of every patient. This begins with extensive pre-operative screening, including individualized patient and family education. On the day of the procedure, Gamma Knife patients receive one on one nursing from our dedicated staff.
Administrative Assistant
The Administrative Assistant plays an important role in the Gamma Knife team. Often, she is the first contact patients have with the Gamma Knife Center. To meet our patients needs, she is responsible for scheduling and coordinating both consultation appointments as well as dates of surgery, and obtaining the insurance authorization for the procedure. She is in ongoing communications with the patients, and assists with the completion of all required paperwork. On the Day of Surgery, our Adminstrative Assistant is the one to greet the patients and families upon arrival to the GK center, and is available to help family members with any needs they may have during the course of the treatment day.
