SUNY Upstate Medical University researchers have developed a simple, safe, and cost effective solution to be used in near infra-red tissue imaging.

Researchers at SUNY Upstate Medical University have developed an improved fluorescent compound used tissue imaging. Typical imaging of renal tissue is conducted using a common fluorophore in medical diagnostics - indocyanine green - and near infra-red light. This method however does not yield a strong signal to background ratio. As a result imaging tissue like ureters, is limited during pelvic surgery. Finding a solution that fluoresces at a greater intensity would be of great value to surgeons.

SUNY Upstate’s novel solution for tissue imaging involves the use of indocyanine green and powdered milk. Our researchers have found the optimal blend of these two compounds to yield a significantly enhanced signal to background ratio. This technology is particularly valuable because both compounds are already approved for use in humans by the FDA. Furthermore, these compounds are easy to procure and cost efficient. This technology provides a significant advantage over the use of indocyanine green alone.
