Referring Physicians

As one of the first Transplant Programs in Upstate New York, University Hospital's Department of Surgery Transplant Program has developed a strong and special relationships with nephrologists from Ogdensburg to Binghamton.

With the growth of the Transplant Program, and the success of its organ donation initiatives, the Program can offer area nephrologists and their patients shorter waiting times than many areas of the country. Importantly, the Transplant Program is emphasizing close ties to area nephrologists, hospitals and dialysis units. This is exemplified by its Educational Outreach Programs, and in late 1996, an opportunity for on-line data retrieval.

The area nephrologists are also a key to the success the Transplant Program has had shortening the length of stay for the transplant event. The Transplant Team and the expert local nephrologists and primary care providers act as a team to provide close ongoing dialog and monitoring of patients locally following discharge. This enables our recipients to get home earlier.
