Upstate University Hospital is the teaching facility for SUNY Upstate Medical University and the core facility for our residency program. The Upstate University Hospital's downtown campus site is certified for 409 beds, while the Upstate University Hospital's Community General site is certified for an additional 326 beds.  Upstate is considered a full service hospital that provides tertiary care to the Central New York region which encompasses more than 23 counties with a population of 1.5 million.  Annually, there are almost 17,000 admissions, approximately 12,100 operative procedures, and over 50,000 Emergency Department visits.

The Department of Surgery and resident training facilities are housed within the structure of Upstate University Hospital downtown campus.

Residents rotate through multiple clinical services at Upstate including:

  • Acute Care Surgery
  • Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
  • Burns
  • Critical Care Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Surg. Oncology 1 Pancreas and Liver Surgery
  • Surg. Oncology 2 Breast, Endocrine, & Colorectal Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

In addition to these inpatient services, the ambulatory services at Upstate provide ample out-patient experiences.

Although the core of the residency program is based at Upstate University Hospital, all general hospitals in Syracuse are affiliated with the SUNY UME Surgical Residency Training Program.
