S0424: Molecular Epidemiology Case Series Study of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Smoking and Non-Smoking Women and Men

What is the purpose of the study?
To assess lung tissue from cancer patients for specific tobacco smoke carcinogens and to determine if these factors differ by gender, smoking status. The study will also look at patient self report questionnaire data on smoking, carcinogenic exposures, economic and educational status, family smoking status, reproductive factors, weight loss, and medication use of male versus female never-smoker versus ever-smoker.
Who is eligible?
Patients must have newly diagnosed primary histologically confirmed Satge I, II, IIIA, or IIIB non small cell lung cancer.

No - What tests and procedures are involved?
The patient will complete a detailed questionnaire. Tissue samples will be collected either from the biopsy or at the time of surgery. Blood samples (30 ml) will be taken at the time of registration into the study. Patients will return for follow up annually for 5 years.
