Research

The Pulmonary and Critical Care division is also involved in many clinical research projects. Research activities include: Airway hyperreactivity, sleep disordered breathing, mediator inhibition in systemic inflammatory response associated with critical illness, clinical and physiological correlations of dyspnea, evaluation of high risk surgery patients by cardiopulmonary exercise testing, pulmonary embolisms, sarcoidosis, bronchoscopy, adult respiratory distress syndrome, utilization of resources in the intensive care unit and long term outcomes following critical illness.

These activities are based on a nationally recognized tradition of interest in cardiopulmonary physiology. Subspecialized interest is evolving in the evaluation and management of occupationally related lung disorders and rehabilitation of patients with impairment due to pulmonary and sleep disorders.
