Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Our Residency Program
The
VA Medical Center is a 287-bed major teaching hospital with a 16-bed psychiatric
inpatient service, an outpatient division, a clinical psychology division
and a day-treatment center. Residents have a required two-month inpatient
rotation during the PGY-1 or 2 years, which they spend doing diagnostic
evaluations and treatment of acute inpatients. There is also a two-month
rotation in emergency evaluations and crisis intervention. In PGY-3 and
4, residents follow patients in the VA psychopharmacology clinic. A newly
established chemical dependency clinic offers PGY-3 and 4 trainees experience
in treating substance abuse on an outpatient basis. The VA has an active
research program, including an internationally renowned program in neuropsychopharmacology.
