Our Residency Program
Psychiatry is a fascinating field. It has enormous potential to be helpful to patients while engaging and challenging the physician as well.
Our field has become so vast that it can accommodate interests in neuropsychiatry, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, families and groups, the mind/body interface, and even the social sciences. Few areas of medicine are as holistic and concerned with how each patient lives. Despite this enormous growth, there remains a shortage of psychiatrists in most areas of this country.
In Syracuse, we are pluralistic in our approach to psychiatry, offering superior learning experiences in both the biological and psychological approaches. We believe that often these treatments need to be integrated for the
best patient care.
Some national "firsts" we offer:
- The first Psychiatry-Medicine Internship, which is now the standard
- The first combined Brief Therapy-Psychopharmacology Fellowship
- The nation's first Psychiatry Residency combined with a Masters in Public Administration
We are now piloting the national curriculum for teaching AIDS in psychiatry.
While there are many fine programs in psychiatry across the country, I hope you will come and experience for yourself the very special warmth and excitement offered by our residency program.
