Our Clerkship Program

  The Junior Clerkship in Psychiatry is a six week course designed to provide 3rd and 4th year medical students with the material necessary to become acquainted with and proficient in:

• Evaluating patients with mental illness
• Diagnosing patients with mental illness
• Treating patients with mental illness
• Preparing for associated exams

Students will be assigned to one of the following locations: Inpatient Service at Hutchings Psychiatric Center, University Hospital, or Veterans' Hospital; Consultation Service, or Outpatient Services at University Hospital; CPEP, Veterans' Hospital; the students will also have additional experiences while On-Call in the evenings at CPEP, as well as at SUH and VA Medical Center. Students interested in working with children and asolescents will be offered that opportunity. In addition, there are case conferences, grand rounds and the opportunity to observe children and adolescents being evaluated.

Through these experiences, students are expected to learn and use the DSM-IV diagnostic system and provide adequate psychopharmacological interventions and supportive psychotherapy with a diverse patient population.
