Research Opportunities
Research at SUNY Upstate
Research Facilities
College
of Medicine - Medical students are encouraged to engage in Summer Research
on an informal basis under the supervision of faculty members with whom they
share common interests. Many students pursue such research projects during the
summer between their first and second years. Students may receive a stipend
for their participation in a project or may pursue the formal approval process
required to receive academic credit.
Medical Student Research Program (MSRP)- Medical students
who wish to acquire strong research backgrounds without the formal structure
of a degree-granting program may apply for the MSRP program. The program provides
students with three, 12-week periods of research over three years. With the
aid of a faculty sponsor, each student is expected to write a publishable
paper or prepare an honors thesis. There are 20 positions available in the
MSRP program each year. Students apply during their first year in medical
school.
College of Graduate Studies
Major Research Areas
- Research at Upstate spans many disciplines from basic science using model
systems to translational and clinical research.
Summer Undergraduate Research
Fellowship (SURF) Program - The aim of the SURF program is to expose undergraduate
students to biomedical research. During an intensive ten-week summer program,
undergraduates, with appropriate faculty help, will formulate their own proposal,
carry out research under the supervision of one of our faculty, write a research
paper and have the opportunity to see their work published.
SB3 Program- The Structural Biology,
Biochemistry and Biophysics (SB3) program is a collaboration of Upstate, Syracuse
University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. It is one
of only 16 programs in structural biology in the country.
MD/PhD - Our MD/PhD program combines
medical school with graduate school to award dual degrees. The MD/PhD program
offers students a wide selection of research areas for their laboratory work.
Students accepted to the program receive tuition waivers and a stipend.
