Transport: | Room Temperature DO NOT REFRIGERATE |
Stability: | 30 minutes at room temperature if received in a syringe or sterile cup Specimens in anaerobic transport device: ≤ 24 hours at room temperature |
Container: | Sterile container or capped syringe with air and needle removed Gel swab if necessary. |
Rejection Causes: | Body sites which normally harbor anaerobic flora are not acceptable, including nose, throat, oral, respiratory secretions, gastric contents, non-surgical vaginal or cervical swabs, voided or catheterized urine, feces, skin, or superficial wound. |

Additional Information
Swabs are suboptimal specimens for recovery of anaerobic organisms. Tissue or abscess aspirates are preferred. If necessary, swabs should be submitted using gel swabs.Performed
