Specimen Requirements

Suprapubic or surgically collected urine, sterile tissues/fluids, bronchial brushings, deep wound aspirates
Collection:Collect using standard procedures.
Transport:Room Temperature DO NOT REFRIGERATE
Stability:30 minutes at room temperature if received in a syringe or sterile cup
Specimens in anaerobic transport device: ≤ 24 hours at room temperature
Container:Sterile container or capped syringe with air and needle removed
Gel swab if necessary.
Rejection Causes:Body sites which normally harbor anaerobic flora are not acceptable, including nose, throat, oral, respiratory secretions, gastric contents, non-surgical vaginal or cervical swabs, voided or catheterized urine, feces, skin, or superficial wound.

Additional Information

Swabs are suboptimal specimens for recovery of anaerobic organisms. Tissue or abscess aspirates are preferred. If necessary, swabs should be submitted using gel swabs.
