Ferro to Receive Planned Parenthood Award
SYRACUSE, NY (10/26/11) — Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region (PPRSR) is proud to honor Dr. Philip Ferro as the 2011 recipient of the Ellen Fairchild Award. The award will be presented to Dr. Ferro at the Planned Parenthood Annual Cocktail Reception, featuring Gloria Steinem, on November 15th at the Genesee Grande Hotel.
Dr. Ferro, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Upstate Medical University, is being honored for his skilled and compassionate care in obstetrics and gynecology in the Syracuse community for over 50 years. Dr. Ferro, Director of the Family Planning Clinic at University Health Care Center, works at both Upstate and Crouse Hospitals.
Dr. Ferro is a charter member of the Childbirth Education Association of Greater Syracuse and the American Association of Planned Parenthood Physicians. Dr. Ferro has conducted extensive research and training on newly developed methods of birth control.
In addition to his teaching and private practice, Dr. Ferro has served as the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region.

About the Ellen Fairchild Award
Ellen Fairchild, former Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Center of Syracuse from 1966 to 1978, helped open the nation’s first legal freestanding abortion clinic, just hours after New York State legalized abortion in 1970. She led the way in sex education, developing the Community Sex Education Center and Library. This award recognizes the achievements of Syracuse Planned Parenthood employees, volunteers, donors and community members who exhibit commitment, innovation and excellence in their work to support Planned Parenthood.
