Shawky Badawy, MD
Dr. Shawky Badawy has served the university community with loyalty, dedication, and commitment for nearly 30 years. He is known for his ability to guide, mentor and educate many individuals, including patients, residents, and colleagues. His help and counsel are frequently sought after, whether for the ambulatory patient or in the surgical suite. Dr. Badawy responds tirelessly, exercising his knowledge and skills to the betterment of the patient. He has been a frequent recipient of the Best Resident Teacher Award in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has produced several videotapes of challenging surgical procedures that serve as educational tools. It is his practice to always strive to improve medical care, whether by personal example or demonstration.
Dr. Badawy came to the Upstate campus community in 1972 as a resident in Ob/Gyn. Following completion of his residency he became a member of the faculty and then Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology in 1975. He was the first certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist in the community. During 1997-1998 he became interim chair and then permanent chair of the Ob/Gyn Department. He has organized the department so it functions well and also is attractive to highly qualified resident applicants.
An exemplary citizen and the supporter of the university community, Dr. Badawy has chaired the Quality Assurance Committee since 1986. This position requires the respect of the faculty as a whole and his long tenure testifies to his ability to lead with fairness and effectiveness. He also has served as a member of the demanding Faculty Appointment and Promotion Committee of the medical school since 1988. Through all his activities, he espouses interdepartmental cooperation and ventures, and uses visionary skills to enhance the welfare of the department and university as a whole.
Additionally, Dr. Badawy is appreciated and the valued for his easy accessibility and involvement in the wider community. He regularly speaks to public groups within Upstate New York regarding womens health for the young and elderly. He also is co-founder and president of the Fertility Society of Upstate New York, which holds scientific meetings for physicians and other allied health professionals. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ferre Institute and a consultant to the Mid-York Fertility Society in Utica. He has organized, chaired and spoken at national and international conferences, bringing to the forefront the latest information on difficult and complicated Ob/Gyn problems. He also has mentored several research fellows from the United States and abroad and helped with their doctoral theses.
Dr. Badawy is known nationally and internationally for his expertise on endometriosis and conducts ongoing meaningful research in this area. He is widely published in professional journals, having authored more than 200 publications including articles, abstracts, poster presentations and book chapters. He also is the editor of two books. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ob/Gyn and the American Board of Ob/Gyn, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology. He is very active as a member and fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Royal Society of medicine, the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
