Upstate celebrates National Nurses and National Hospital weeks

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- In celebration of its dedicated staff, Upstate Medical University and Upstate University Hospital will present educational, wellness and recognition activities throughout National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week in May.

- National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week is celebrated May 6 to 12. In celebration, Upstate’s 3RPN (Recruitment, Retention, Recognition and Professional Development) committee offers activities open to the Nursing Department staff. In addition, Upstate’s College of Nursing will host a talk by Dianne Cooney Miner, PhD, RN, dean of the Wegmans College of Nursing at St. John Fisher College and co-author of the BS in 10 legislation: The Initiative to Advance Nursing Education in New York State Monday May 9, at noon in Medical Alumni Auditorium.

Fleet Feet Sports Nurses Open House slated through May 6
Fleet Feet Sports is offering a special one-on-one fitting for inserts and shoes. With each purchase, nurses will be entered to win a Pampering Package. For locations, visit Fleet Feet.

Upstate nursing: state of the union mid-year update is May 5
Upstate University Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Nancy Page will present the update Thursday, May 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. in 2231 Weiskotten Hall. Page presented the update to the Community Campus May 3.

Nurses Day receptions are May 6
Refreshments will be provided and gifts will be delivered to units on May 6. The receptions will be held at the following locations:
-- Upstate University Hospital Downtown Campus: Friday, May 6. 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. 11th floor Kinney Foundation Performance Center, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.
-- Upstate University Hospital Community Campus: Friday, May 6. 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dining Room 1.

Lecture and scholarships award ceremony. “Baccalaureate education as a model for excellence: the importance of the BS in 10 legislation,” May 9
Noon to 1:30 p.m. Medical Alumni Auditorium, Weiskotten Hall. Dianne Cooney Miner, PhD, RN, FAAN, FFNMRCSI (Hon), founding dean of the Wegmans School of Nursing at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, will present the lecture. Cooney Miner’s career reflects substantive accomplishments related to influencing and improving patient care through nursing education. With Dr. Barbara Zittel, she authored the BS in 10 legislation: The Initiative to Advance Nursing Education in New York State. A reception and Upstate College of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarships award ceremony will follow. Sponsored by Upstate’s College of Nursing.

Note: 3RPN began its National Nursing Week celebration early by presenting events May 2 through 4 that included nursing receptions, blessing of the hands and nurse pampering sessions,

- National Hospital Week activities are May 9, 12, 13
In celebration of National Hospital Week and to recognize the dedication of its employees, Upstate University Hospital administrators will present employees with a token of their appreciation Monday, May 9, at the following times and locations:

-- Community Campus: 6:30 to 9 a.m. Main entrance and Patient Testing (Diagnostic) Center entrance; 2:30 to 4 p.m. Main entrance.
-- Downtown Campus: 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. Main entrance, employee entrance and second level bridge entrance.

Administrators will visit hospital departments and units with snacks Thursday, May 12 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Friday, May 13, at 5 a.m.

Employees at offsite locations will be recognized for their efforts with gifts Monday, May 9 and snacks on Thursday, May 12 or Friday, May 13.

Be on the lookout for the National Hospital Week poster, distributed to each department at all Upstate locations and also for special messages on Upstate television screens and in Upstate Announcements.
