University Hospital brings medical expertise to New York State Fair Aug. 24 to Sept. 4

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Physicians, nurses, nutritionists and other medical professionals will offer healthy living tips and highlight medical breakthroughs at University Hospital’s exhibition at the New York State Fair.

The University Hospital exhibition is located in the Science and Industry Building on the New York State Fairgrounds and is open Aug. 24 through Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“University Hospital’s home at the New York State Fair provides an opportunity for people to learn more about healthy living and see some of the new breakthroughs and treatments that are now available at the hospital,” said Phillip Schaengold, JD, MBA, chief executive officer and University Hospital and senior associate dean for hospital affairs in the College of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Individual hospital departments will be showcased each day as noted below:

? Aug. 24, Vascular Services and Interventional Radiology will feature current therapies offered at University Hospital.

? Aug. 25, Upstate New York Poison Center will feature its hazardous product look-alike display. The Deparment of Medicine will distribute healthcare proxies.

? Aug. 26, Orthopedic Surgery will offer advice on how to prevent sports-related injuries and highlight orthopedic surgery services. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will provide flexibility and strength testing and demonstrate easy exercise techniques.

? Aug. 27, Emergency Medicine will hold CPR/automated external defibrillator demonstrations.

? Aug. 28, University Geriatricians will discuss aging issues. OASIS will showcase its popular educational offerings and provide information on new memberships.

? Aug. 29, Oncology will highlight the latest in cancer treatments, such as minimally invasive, robotic-assisted prostate surgery and other procedures.

? Aug. 30, Cardiology will display devices used in heart procedures and host an interactive health quiz game

? Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, Stroke Center officials will provide information on stroke prevention and warning signs as well as highlight rehabilitation for stroke victims.

? Sept. 1, Health Sciences Library will highlight its free public service, the Health Information Center.

? Sept. 2, Mindful Eating Program will showcase mindful eating tips and menus. Morrison Healthcare Food Services will provide nutrition counseling.

? Sept. 3, Pediatrics will feature information on the forthcoming Golisano Children’s Hospital and children’s health issues.

? Sept. 4, Nursing Recruitment will provide information on nursing opportunities at University Hospital.

University Hospital is a 360-bed level 1 trauma center that is part of the State University of New York and is the future home of the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
