Laurel E. Baum joins Health Science Center at Syracuse as University Hospital Compliance Officer
Laurel E. Baum, R.N., J.D., has joined University Hospital of the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse as the Hospital Compliance Officer. Baum is responsible for identifying hospital functions and business practices requiring compliance activities. Under the direction of University Hospital Executive Director Ben Moore, III, she provides continual compliance risk assessment and education and refinement of the hospital’s compliance program.
Baum’s experience includes a unique blend of legal expertise and direct patient care. Prior to University Hospital, she served as an associate at the Syracuse law firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King LLP. Her practice area included health and hospital law, not for-profit corporation law, and Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse.
From 1987 to 1990, Baum was a pediatric nurse administrator at University Hospital of the Health Science Center at Syracuse. She was responsible for the management of the hospital’s inpatient unit serving acutely and chronically ill children.
Baum received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Widener University, where she graduated with academic honors. She earned her juris doctor in 1997 from SUNY Buffalo School of Law, graduating magna cum laude.
Baum resides in Fayetteville with her husband, Todd, and their daughters, Jordan and Shannon.
