Gala, Radiothon raise $448,000 for Upstate programs
SYRACUSE, N.Y.— This year’s Upstate Gala and Radiothon for Kids, two major annual fundraising events for Upstate Medical University, have raised more than $448,000 to benefit the Central New York community.
More than 700 people attended the Gala, raising more than $370,000. The funds will be used to support a variety of programs and services for the aging at Upstate University Hospital and Upstate’s Community Campus. The Gala was held Nov. 30 at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center in downtown Syracuse.
Dr. James and Lori Ciaccio and Judge Jack and Sybil Schultz were the 2012 co-chairs for the event. James Ciaccio, MD, is an assistant professor and director and chief of service for the Emergency Department at the Community Campus. Lori Ciaccio is an educator. Schultz is a retired DeWitt town justice. Sybil Schultz has worked as a travel agent in Syracuse and as an educator.
The Clear Channel Radiothon for Kids celebrated its 10thanniversary by raising more than $78,000 with all proceeds remaining in Central New York to benefit patients who receive care at the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Radiothon was aired live from the studios of WSYR Radio, B104, and Y94 Dec. 5 through Dec. 7. Hot 107.9 and Power 620 also carried Radiothon segments throughout the three-day broadcast. The broadcast highlighted some of the hospital’s newest advances in pediatric research and patient care. Interviews with the children and their family members and with members of the hospital’s health and medical team were also featured.
According to Toni Gary, director of community relations for the Upstate Foundation and Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, donations came from more 475 calls received during Radiothon.
“It is so heartwarming for the children and families who are cared for at the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital to receive this generous support from the community,” said Gary. “The radio station talent and staff made all the difference in this successful event.”
