Upstate offers good health at the New York State Fair

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University will offer free health screenings and health-related information, including community resources for the uninsured, advances in cancer care and smoking cessation programs, at its New York State Fair exhibit through Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Science and Industry Building. Upstate exhibits include:

Aug. 25

• Upstate Orthopedics. Learn about the new after- hours, walk in program, OrthoNow!

• CNY Occupational Health Clinical Center. Prevention of workplace injuries and environmental illness and the NYS Occupational Health Clinical Network will be highlighted.

• Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Information on outpatient therapies and programs; backpack safety.

• New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program. Educational information; giveaways.

Aug. 26

• Upstate Cancer Center. Information on cancer prevention, early detection and treatment strategies. Update on the facility’s construction.

• Upstate New York Poison Center. Look-a-like display; information on common and toxic household items and poison prevention.

• Smoking Cessation. Tips and tricks to help kick the smoking habit.

• American Cancer Society. Patient resources and services information.

• Financial Resource Center. Information on options for individuals and families who lack health insurance.

Aug. 27

• Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center. Signs and symptoms of Autism and Aspergers. Kidspeak puppet workshop.

• New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program. See Aug. 25 listing.

• Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Tobacco-users survey; free stop-smoking resources.

Aug. 28

• Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Information on the “Listen, Evaluate, Anticipate, Plan and Proceed” (LEAPP) program to minimize patient pain and distress and maximize efficiency and safety.

• Upstate Connect. A resource for physician referrals, health information and advice, community resources, and Upstate events.

Aug. 29

• Vision Center. Department of Ophthalmology staff will offer visual acuity and glaucoma testing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Hyperbaric/Wound Care Center. Educational information about hyperbaric oxygen therapy and advanced wound healing modalities.

• Geriatrics. Information on outpatient services at University Geriatricians/ Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center of CNY, and on Alzheimer’s disease.

Aug. 30

• Upstate Heart and Vascular Center. Blood pressure checks.

• Sleep Lab Center. Professionals will be available to discuss sleep disorders, sleep testing and technology to treat sleep disorders.

Aug. 31

• Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Information on acute care and rehabilitation for in-hospital stay and progression to rehabilitation unit; equipment descriptions and use.

• Stroke Program. Information regarding stroke signs and symptoms and treatment and management. Interactive day recognizing Gold Plus award and Gold Plus Standards in Stroke Care.

Sept. 1

• Bicycle Helmet Safety. Children will be fitted for free bicycle helmets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Must be accompanied by a parent. Bicycle helmet safety education will be provided by medical professionals from Upstate’s Trauma and Pediatric Neurosurgery departments. Child will sign a “contract” committing to safe biking behavior.

• CNY Sports Concussion Center at Upstate University Hospital. Educational materials on the prevention and recognition of sports-related concussion as well as post-injury evaluation and management.

• College of Health Professions. Learn how physical therapy, clinical laboratory services, medical imaging and radiation therapy offer exciting undergraduate and graduate career opportunities at Upstate Medical University.

Sept. 4

• Emergency Services. CPR Survey: participants will answer a short questionnaire
