Upstate rolls out welcome mat for new students

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University welcomes students and families to campus with a full schedule of orientation activities that include white coat ceremonies, campus tours, academic and informational sessions and social events. Orientation events run through Aug. 22. Classes begin Aug. 23.
Four hundred and ninety-three new students will join Upstate this fall: 185 in the College of Medicine, which includes 25 students enrolled in the college’s master’s of public health program; 157 in the College of Health Professions, 118 in the College of Nursing and 33 in the College of Graduate Studies. Including the new students, Upstate’s total enrollment for 2010 is 1,502.
A President’s Welcome Convocation for parents and students will be held Aug. 19, at 9 a.m. followed by a Parents’ and Family Day Program at 10:30 a.m. at the Oncenter, 800 S. State St., Syracuse.
Other events include the College of Medicine’s Dinner with a Doctor and the College of Graduate Studies’ Dinner with a Research Scientist Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. at various locations; and a dinner with faculty for students in the colleges of Health Professions and Nursing Aug. 22, at 5 p.m. in the ninth floor dining room in Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse.
Students will be welcomed to their college in the presence of their family and friends during Upstate’s White Coat ceremonies.
The College of Medicine and the Medical Alumni Foundation will present a White Coat ceremony Aug. 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Oncenter Ballroom. Each College of Medicine first-year student will receive a white coat made possible in part by a grant from the Onondaga County
Medical Society to the Parents and Family Association of the Medical Alumni Foundation. The grant also supports a reception following the ceremony.
Also on Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m., Key Bank joins the Office of the President, the Nursing Alumni Association and the Student Association of the College of Nursing (SACON) in hosting the College of Nursing White Coat ceremony for all nursing students in the ninth floor auditorium in Weiskotten Hall. Each undergraduate nursing student will receive a gift and each graduate nursing student will receive a white coat, courtesy of the College of Nursing Alumni Association.
The College of Health Professions and its Alumni Association will present a White Coat ceremony for its students and family members Aug. 25, at 5 p.m. in 9295 Weiskotten Hall. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
