Upstate University Hospital CEO named one of nation's top 60 physician leaders of hospitals

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate University Hospital Chief Executive Officer John McCabe, M.D., has been named one of the nation's top 60 physician leaders of hospitals and health systems by a leading healthcare publication.

The announcement appears online and will be published in the June edition of Becker's Hospital Review, is a bimonthly national publication and e-newsletter that offers information on business and legal news relating to hospitals and health systems. The physicians named to the list were selected based on nominations, research and accolades received by the institutions they lead.

McCabe was appointed chief executive officer of Upstate University Hospital and senior vice president for hospital affairs of Upstate Medical University in August 2009. Highlights of his 22-year career at Upstate include the development of an Emergency Medicine residency training program, overseeing the opening and transition of patients into the Upstate University Hospital's East Tower and Golisano Children's Hospital, the development and opening of a mass casualty unit and upgraded infirmary at the New York State Fairgrounds, the development of an emergency medicine simulation center for training medical residents and the expansion of the hospital's Emergency Room.

McCabe's national leadership positions include his recent election as chair of the board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties, the organization that oversees the certification of physician specialists in the United States.

This isn't the first time Becker's has recognized McCabe: In September 2009, McCabe was named one of the top 25 movers and shakers in the hospital industry.

In addition to McCabe, others named to the list include chief executive officers of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Stony Brook University Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
