Students return to campus Aug. 19
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University will welcome students and families to campus Aug. 19 with a full schedule of orientation activities that include white coat ceremonies, campus tours, academic and informational sessions and social events. Orientation events, including the popular “Dinner with a Doctor,” will be held Aug. 19 to 23. Classes begin Aug. 24.
Four hundred and fifty-three new students will join Upstate this fall: 177 in the College of Medicine, 128 in the College of Health Professions, 128 in the College of Nursing and 21 in the College of Graduate Studies.
“Members of the Student Affairs staff have been busy preparing for the arrival of our new students for some time now,” said Julie R. White, Ph.D., dean of student affairs. “We will offer an orientation program that not only introduces new students to the academic rigor of our institution, but perhaps most important, we will be welcoming them to the wonderful community that is Upstate Medical University. We are delighted to have these new students join us and we have great expectations for their success.”
A President’s Welcome Convocation for parents and students will be held Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. followed by a Parents’ and Family Day Program at 10:30 a.m. at the Oncenter in Syracuse. Other events include the College of Medicine’s Dinner with a Doctor and the College of Graduate Studies’ Dinner with a Research Scientist Aug. 23 at 3 p.m. at various locations; and a dinner with faculty for students in the colleges of Health Professions and Nursing Aug. 23, at 5 p.m. in the ninth floor dining room in Weiskotten Hall.
Students will be welcomed to their college and the healthcare profession in the presence of their family and friends during Upstate’s White Coat ceremonies. The College of Medicine and the Medical Alumni Foundation will present a White Coat ceremony Aug. 20, at 3:30 p.m. in the Oncenter Ballroom. Each College of Medicine first-year student will receive a white coat made possible by a grant from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to the Parents and Family Association of the Medical Alumni Foundation. The grant also supports a reception following the ceremony.
Also on Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m., Key Bank joins the Office of the President, the Nursing Alumni Association and the Student Association of the College of Nursing (SACON) in hosting the College of Nursing White Coat ceremony for all nursing students in the ninth floor auditorium in Weiskotten Hall. Each undergraduate nursing student will receive a gift and each graduate nursing student will receive a white coat, courtesy of the College of Nursing Alumni Association.
The College of Health Professions and its Alumni Association will present a White Coat ceremony for its students and family members Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. in 9295 Weiskotten Hall. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
