Julie White, Ph.D., appointed dean of student affairs at SUNY Upstate Medical University
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Julie White, Ph.D., a student affairs administrator who has held leadership roles at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University, has been named dean of student affairs at SUNY Upstate Medical University. The appointment is effective Nov. 12.
As dean of student affairs, White will oversee services and support for more than 1,200 students enrolled in the university’s four colleges: Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing. Included in her responsibilities are Student Housing, Student Activities, the Registrar’s Office, the Admissions Office, Multicultural Affairs, Student Information Systems, Student Counseling and Financial Aid.
“Dr. White and her office will provide guidance and support to SUNY Upstate students to ensure that they experience a vibrant and dynamic campus life that supports their academic endeavors,” said SUNY Upstate President David R. Smith, M.D. “She brings to SUNY Upstate the experience, perspective and energy to do this well.”
In addition, Smith said that White will develop the Student Affairs infrastructure needed to accommodate an enrollment increase designed to meet region’s growing need for health care professionals.
White joins SUNY Upstate from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), where she served since 2001 as associate dean of student life and experiential learning, guiding all functions of student life, including student orientation, peer tutoring, students activities housing assignments, cointernship programs and other activities.
At ESF, White was a member of the President’s Cabinet and Academic Council, and served as a member of a four-person team appointed by the president to monitor and evaluate progress of the college’s strategic plan. She is credited with strengthening ESF’s service-learning initiative, which contributes 65,000 hours of student service to the community annually through 60 courses with nearly 100 community partners.
White served as ESF’s director of student activities (1993-2001) and in student affairs positions at Syracuse University (1990-1993), where she also taught classes in student affairs administration.
In 1998 White received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
White received both her master’s degree and doctorate in higher/postsecondary education administration from Syracuse University
White succeeds Lynn Cleary, M.D., who served as interim dean of student affairs following the death of Gregory L. Keating, Ph.D., who held the post from 2001 to 2006.
