Shawky Badawy, MD, Named Chair of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse
Shawky Badawy, M.D., professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, has been appointed chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Badawy has served as Interim Chair of the Department since May of 1997.
Dr. Badawy joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an assistant professor in 1973. He was appointed associate professor in 1978, full professor in 1981 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and professor in the Department of Pathology in 1993. He was named Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in 1975.
Dr. Badawy earned his medical degree at Ain Shams University, School of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt. He completed an internship and residency in Cairo and also a residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Health Science Center at Syracuse (then named Upstate Medical Center). He further completed a fellowship in Reproductive Physiology and Endocrinology at Rockefeller University, the Population Council, New York. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons, as well as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons. He holds memberships to the Society for Reproductive Endocrinologist, the Society for Reproductive Surgeons, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Board of Obstetrics/Gynecology, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology.
Dr. Badawy is the author of approximately 200 articles, book chapters and abstracts. He supervised thesis research studies for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees for candidates from Syracuse University and international fellows. He has been invited as a Visiting Professor by many national and international institutions. He has participated in forums for the public education of various issues related to women’s health and wellness.
Dr. Badawy serves as a reviewer for many scientific journals including Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fertility and Sterility and the Journal of Gynecologic Surgery. His expertise includes endometriosis, hyperprolactinemia, infertility management, hirsutism, menstrual dysfunction, early pregnancy fetal wastage, PMS and menopause, laparoscopic, hysteroscopic surgery and microsurgery.
He has served on many committees, including the Quality Assurance Committee at SUNY and has been a representative from the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology for the Governing Board of the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.
Dr. Badawy resides in DeWitt with his wife, Lauren, and their four children.
