Six local musicians, including a former clarinetist, on the cusp of being the first to be certified as music practitioners from Upstate will begin playing for patients all across CNY as part of the program's final requirements.

Listeners to ClearChannel's Radiothon for Kids can benefit Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital's during three-day program that features interviews with patients and their families, physician and other children's hospital staff members.

As part of its wellness programming, Upstate Medical University has instituted "Meatless Mondays," where the university dining centers and cafe will highlight a meatless entree, such as broccoli tofu stir-fry and brown rice, every Monday. Meatless options are available every day at Upstate, but wellness planners say highlighting the meatless menu can help promote healthy eating. Syracuse University helped launch the Meatless Monday idea in the Syracuse area.

Student ambassadors, selected from the university’s four colleges — Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing — serve as goodwill ambassadors representing Upstate at various community and campus events.

Funds have been designated for the construction of an infusion playroom at the Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders to be housed in the new Upstate Cancer Center.

Puppeteers from the Open Hand Theater perform during the 30th anniversary celebration of the Upstate Medical University's Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center Nov. 3. The center has provided diagnosis and treatment for autism and other disorders since 1972.

Upstate employee survey shows employee smoking has dropped 7 percent since 2002. Cold turkey sandwiches are on the menu for employees who quit smoking for the Great American Smoke Out.

Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital's Child Life Program hosted a Halloween parade for patients and their families. The event is an annual tradition at the children's hospital. Staff volunteer their time and goodies to help create a sense of routine and normalcy for patients who unable to trick-or-treat outside of the hospital. Nurses like Jenelle Vargulick, 11G, escort patients through a maze of treat stops in the children's hospital "neighborhood" created by our own child life specialists.
