Collection Development and Management

Collection Development and Management oversees bringing new and needed items into our collection.

The department was formerly known as "Acquisitions" - because its main role was acquiring monographs and journals for on-site use. As money and space became scarce, and electronic pathways presented the opportunity for borrowing rather than owning materials, the title and the functions of the department began to change. Functions enlarged to encompass not only acquisitions but also managing the collection with regard to space, location, currency, scope, and withdrawal. The term Collection Development and Management best describes our varied roles and responsibilities.

Through all these expansions of duties, the mission and goals have remained constant. As an academic health sciences library, we provide information and access to information through all media, print and electronic. We are here to support, in order of priority, patient care, our academic programs and the faculty teaching in these programs, research undertaken at our institution, and the general public in a fifteen county area.

Print Serials, Print Monographs and CD-ROM Serials are the primary items we purchase. Other Audio-visual materials are purchased directly by Media Services. Collection Development orders items for Open and Closed Reserves and will consider all requests submitted by Faculty and Staff. Departmental analyses of the currency and scope of our collection in specific subject areas are greatly appreciated.

To request that an item be purchased, please contact the department at 464-7109, complete the online Purchase Recommendation, or email Rosemarie Bundy, Head of Collection Development and Management. Request forms are also available in the library.
