Need Full Text? Try ArticleLinker!

Very often a citation only can be found in one of the Library’s databases, while its full text is available in another part of our electronic collection. Until recently, several additional steps were required to navigate to the article. ArticleLinker, a service now offered by the Health Sciences Library, will initiate a search of our holdings for the full-text article with just one click.

ArticleLinker

Look for the ArticleLinker icon or for a "Full Text" link that will be part of your database search results. Activating the link will open a Web page with links to full text if available. If an article is not available online in full text, you may order it via the convenient link to the Library’s Interlibrary Loan service.

Because new browser windows will be generated when using ArticleLinker, be sure to set pop-up blocking applications to allow the opening of new windows when using this service. ArticleLinker has been integrated into most of the databases to which the Library subscribes, including Ovid, ScienceDirect, Health Reference Center, ProQuest, and EbscoHost. Off-campus users will be required to log in to LEAP when prompted to do so in order to gain access to full-text services.

Please direct any questions or concerns to us at <askalibrarian@upstate.edu> or call us at 464-4581. See the Web page announcement at <www.upstate.edu/library/news/#al>.

Welcome Rebecca Kindon!

Rebecca joins us as a recent graduate of Syracuse University where she earned her M.L.I.S. degree. She is a member of Beta Phi Mu, the international library science honor society, and a member of the Upstate New York and Ontario Chapter (UNYOC) of the Medical Library Association (MLA). Rebecca did not come blindly to the Library, she had a chance to test the waters, so to speak, while she completed a double internship here last spring. The waters must have been inviting because she is now a permanent fixture in the Reference/Educational Services Department.

Rebecca finished her undergraduate education at Le Moyne College, where she studied psychology. She is native to the central New York region, and is actually fond of the winters here! Every winter she hopes for "big snow" so that she and her husband John can go downhill skiing and snowboarding together. In the summer she can be found puttering around outside in her gardens or attempting to learn to golf.

Prior to working at the Library, Rebecca worked full time at University Health Care Manlius where she managed the practice’s medical records. That was her introduction to the Upstate community, and a pleasant one at that. While her time at UHCM was rich with friendships and experiences she is hopeful that her time at the Health Sciences Library will be just as rewarding.

Rebecca states, "I have always known that I wanted to be a librarian, it just took me a while to figure it out for sure." Now that she has, Rebecca will be spending her time working routine shifts at the Reference Desk and also will be involved in bibliographic instruction.

Rebecca is also the new Associate Editor of the Synapse.

Welcome, Rebecca!

Cell for Free!

Cell Press is offering free print subscriptions!

Are you interested in getting a free print subscription to the journal Cell, one of the premier sources for research and reviews in the life sciences? As a benefit of the Library's license to Cell Online, Upstate Medical University faculty, students, and staff can also receive Cell in print every two weeks (a $165 value) for free!

But why order your own print subscription when you already have access to Cell Online?

  • Convenience - you can read the print version whenever and wherever you want. No computer or printer is necessary!
  • Image Quality - the graphics are better than what you typically see online or when printing out a PDF.
  • Serendipity - the print version is easier for browsing and finding interesting or relevant material that you were not originally searching for.
  • Advertising - stay informed about new products and services, conference announcements, and job opportunities found in the print version ads that are not available online.

The free print subscription is for 26 biweekly issues (one year); the first issue should arrive 4-6 weeks form the date of your order. To order your free subscription, please visit this site and fill out the brief order form: <www.Cell.com/freesub>.

More Dependable Off-Campus Access through LEAP

The library is now using an application called EZ-Proxy to authenticate our off-campus patrons, which allows us to provide better, more consistent access to our online services and resources.

There are a few significant changes with the new system. The following FAQ highlights will help both new and returning users navigate the new system:

Who is entitled to have a LEAP account?

  • Upstate students (including non-matriculated), faculty, and staff, Upstate voluntary faculty, and VA physicians with dual (Upstate/VA) appointments.

How do I get a LEAP account?

What is my Upstate Novell Network account?

  • Your Novell Network userid and password are assigned to you by IMT and allow you to log in to protected computer files shared by your department. The userid and password are originally the same as for your GroupWise e-mail account. Although you may change your Novell or GroupWise password, you will need the original password to use LEAP. If you are not sure of your original Novell password, please contact the IMT Help Desk at 464-4115 or <helpdesk@upstate.edu>.

What if I am not eligible for an Upstate Novell Network account?

How do I get into the resource I want?

  • You no longer need to sign in at the Library home page itself. Instead, just go directly to the resource you want (Medline, Harrison’s, etc.), at which point you will be prompted to sign in.

Will I need to sign in again if I switch resources?

  • No. Once signed in, you will be able to move from one resource to another until you close your browser.

Who do I call for help?

The Library Services Desk -- or: What Happened to the Reference Desk?

The Library is pleased to announce that as of June 6, 2005, a single new services desk was opened to answer your questions or to refer you to the appropriate department that can help. All Library services are now coordinated through what used to be the Circulation Desk. Gone is the traditional Reference Desk, which has now been consolidated behind our integrated Library Services Desk. This will make it easier and faster for you to obtain the information you seek in a "one-stop shopping" environment. Questions as diverse as "What are the latest developments in stem cell research?" and "Where is the nearest restroom?" can all be answered at this single point of service.

Virtually the entire Library staff will be scheduled for some duty at the new desk. Extensive cross-training was done to prepare the staff for this major change. Reference librarians were given basic training in the work of the Circulation Desk and likewise the support staff was given the basics of reference work. Of course, both groups have been taught the limitations of their duties and when to call in the appropriate expert to field the question. This might be the Circulation Supervisor to explain a policy or procedure or a reference librarian to handle a complicated search question.

The new policy also affords us an opportunity to create a more collegial atmosphere by pairing librarians and support staff in this joint venture. We welcome your input concerning this new endeavor. Please e-mail us at <library@upstate.edu> or phone us at 464-7112.

Laptops to Go!

The Health Sciences Library begins a new laptop loan service in the fall semester of 2005. The program will provide students, staff, and faculty with the option of wireless access to the Internet, including library resources, from anywhere in the Library building. This opportunity exists because the Library was recently configured for wireless connectivity. These laptops will be equipped with Microsoft Office 2003, allowing users to work on research projects, spreadsheets, or Powerpoint presentations.

Eligible borrowers are the students, staff, and faculty of Upstate Medical University. To check out a laptop borrowers are required to leave a valid Upstate ID and a valid drivers license, plus sign the Laptop Loan Agreement and a circulation slip which states when the laptop is due. Laptops will be available on a first-come-first-served basis from the Library Services Desk. The loan period will be two hours per day for each patron. Reservations will not be accepted. The laptops are battery operated only and there is no printer attached. All work must be saved to a USB memory card. The user will be responsible for all damaged or lost components.

Constitution Day Commemorated

In accordance with Public Law 108-447, September 17 will henceforth be known as Constitution Day, to commemorate the 1787 signing of the Constitution of the United States of America. This law also mandates that educational institutions receiving federal funds provide easily accessible information regarding the Constitution. In response, the Health Sciences Library has created a Web-based resource with historical context, interesting facts, and puzzles to test your knowledge. To learn more about the Constitution and Constitution Day, and to become more informed about how the Constitution impacts the medical community, please visit the Library's Constitution Web page at <www.upstate.edu/library/constitution/>.

Core Medical Titles Available as E-Books

In addition to the print version of the American Academy of Pediatrics Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases, a.k.a "The Red Book," the Library is pleased to announce the purchase of an online version. The electronic version will be accessible from anywhere on campus. Just visit the Library home page <www.upstate.edu/library/> and look for the title in the drop-down menu, "E-Books," at the upper left under "Quick Links," or select the "All E-Books" option from the same menu and browse by title.

Want to review the title from off-campus? No problem, simply sign in through your LEAP account. However, please be aware that this title was granted a site license that allows for one user at a time, so, as with all licensed resources, we urge you to log off once you are finished using it, so that others can have access to it.

We at the Library know that the electronic reference books are highly used by our faculty and students. We would like to remind you that a variety of titles are available through our StatRef! collection, available through the "E-Books" link, including:

  • Adams and Victor's Principles of Neurology -- 8th edition -- (2005).
  • Current Diagnosis and Treatment in Cardiology -- 2nd edition -- (2003).
  • Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment -- 17th edition -- (2005).
  • Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses -- 9th edition -- (2005).
  • Rudolph's Pediatrics -- 21st edition -- (2003).

The Library is actively seeking additional e-books to increase the breadth and usefulness of the collection.

The New New Books Display

The Library's exhibit of new academic, clinical, and professional books has moved to a more prominent location! Formerly these books were displayed along the wall adjacent to the Open Reserves collection. Now, the books are displayed on a table to the left of the Library entrance.

Please feel free to relax in one of the comfortable chairs situated nearby and preview a book. As always, if you find a book particularly interesting, simply write your name on the white card on the front of the book and you will be called as soon as the book comes off display, within one week's time.

Come in and see our new books display.

Popular Non-Fiction and Fiction Books at the Health Sciences Library!

Looking for a current novel or biography to take home for the weekend? Look no further! The Library's new Leisure Reading Collection beckons all book lovers and reading enthusiasts.

Best sellers, recent fiction and non-fiction, biography, and humor are all on exhibit near the Library entrance. Among the well known authors featured are Tom Clancy, Dick Francis, Michael Crichton, Sue Grafton, Patricia Cornwell, Dave Barry, and Rudolph Giuliani. Our aim is to have a small, rotating collection on hand for the convenience of busy clinical and academic folks who like to read for pleasure. Consisting of donated and leased books, these titles may be borrowed for three weeks by Upstate faculty, staff, and students.

Krames-On-Demand (KOD)

Krames-On-Demand Internet -- KODi

Patient education at Upstate will be greatly enhanced in Fall 2005 with the addition of a resource called Krames-On-Demand (KOD). The Web-based version is Krames-On-Demand Internet (KODi). Krames is a well known producer of patient education materials incorporating colorful graphics and using several delivery methods. More information about the company and its products can be found at its Web site: <www.krames.com>.

Krames-On-Demand will allow Upstate staff to access over 4400 topics on the Web, 2200 in English and 2200 in Spanish, with other languages coming in the near future. Clinical staff will be able to create folders for their specific areas and save time while educating patients. A Custom Content Builder can be used to edit existing Krames documents, or you can use a template to create a new document to meet specific needs of hospital patients.

More information about the content and possibilities of Krames-On-Demand will appear in a future Synapse. Links to the Krames materials will be available at University Hospital's Patient Education page, <www.upstate.edu/uh/pated/>, the Library's Health Information Center page, <www.upstate.edu/library/healthinfo/>, and in the "Databases" menu at the upper left of the Library home page <www.upstate.edu/library/>.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Donates Books and Videos

Smoking Cessation - New Pathfinder

In support of the campus-wide initiative for a completely smoke-free university, the HIC has developed a new Pathfinder devoted to smoking cessation: <www.upstate.edu/library/healthinfo/pathfind/smoking.php>.

As with other Pathfinders, the recent addition on Smoking Cessation identifies books and videos which may be borrowed from the HIC. You can watch an online video titled Smoking Cessation: The Stages of Change or link to the "Smoking Cessation Center" of the HIC's new feature, "Health Library," an EBSCO database product. At the Health Library you will find a wealth of resources on the effects of smoking and how to quit. The Pathfinder is rounded out by links to other agencies which promote smoking cessation and encourage people to quit smoking. Finally, the Pathfinder presents the option to perform an automatic search of the journal literature via PubMed to find the latest articles on smoking cessation.

Other New Topics Available Online in the HIC Health Library

  • Drug and Dietary Supplement Interactions
Each monograph focuses on a particular medication and describes the harmful and helpful effects of various herbal supplements taken along with it.
  • Alternative Therapies
This new section provides evidence-based monographs on alternative therapies and the scientific basis for their effectiveness.
  • Functional Foods
Another new section lists "foods that contain health-promoting substances as well as foods that have been enriched with potentially health-promoting ingredients." As with other sections of the Health Library, unbiased, evidence-based information is provided about these foods.
  • Pregnancy/Birthing Center
Coming soon to the Health Library is the "Pregnancy/Birthing Center," which will offer information arranged by stages of pregnancy.

Linscott's Directory

The familiar bright pink book from the Library's traditional Reference collection, Linscott's Catalog of Immunological and Biological Reagents, is now available free on the Web. The origin of this valuable resource is explained at the publisher's site: <www.linscottsdirectory.com/about.php>:

"As a professor of immunology at the University of California San Francisco, Dr. William D. Linscott was frequently frustrated by the amount of time he had to spend to locate suppliers of specific reagents. Like many researchers of that time, he kept a shelf full of reagent company catalogs and often had to flip through them one at a time to see if this or that company had this or that antibody. In 1979 Dr. Linscott had an epiphany, and decided that someone should put all the companies' product information together in one volume ..."

Linscott's first edition appeared in 1980. Twenty-five years later the Web-based version, called "Linscott's On-Line," is still providing a useful service. It is available at <www.linscottsdirectory.com/>.

Public Health Information Workshop

On July 26, 2005, the Health Sciences Library sponsored a workshop attended by approximately thirty state and local public health personnel, non-profit professionals, and area librarians. Entitled "Navigating the Web with Style and Substance," the goal of the hands-on training was to identify strategies and resources to stay informed in the ever-changing field of public health information. Participants explored a wide range of databases and Web sites such as:

Joan Seidenberg, Education Programs Coordinator from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - Middle Atlantic Region, and Cate Bohn, Community Health Information Specialist from the New York/New Jersey Public Health Training Center, presented the workshop. Additional support was provided by the New York State Department of Health and the CDC Assessment Initiative.
