John Farruggio is this month's Upstate Face

For 20 years, John Farruggio has provided quality service in meeting the needs of our employees in his various roles within the Human Resources Department. He began his career at Upstate in 1987 with Employment and Recruitment. After obtaining his master’s degree in Human Resources Management & Development in 1991, he accepted a position in the Employee/Labor Relations section of HR. From 1997 to 1999, John spent time working in the private sector in manufacturing as an HR Manager before returning to Upstate to his former position in Employee/Labor Relations.

Most recently, in 2008, John transitioned to the HR-Benefits Manager position. In his current role, he is responsible for overseeing the benefits administration of a comprehensive employee benefits program for both State and Research Foundation employees. Some of his areas of responsibility include: health and life insurance, retirement programs, employee leaves of absence, workers’ compensation and disability programs, and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). John, along with his dedicated and hard working staff in the HR-Benefits Office, work diligently to answer any questions and help to guide employees through the benefits process. In addition, John provides benefits education during New Employee Orientation, facilitates benefits-related seminars and workshops throughout the year and works with employees on leave to assist them with their return to work or with pursuing other benefits entitlements.

When asked what he enjoys most about his position, John replied, “Being given the opportunity to help folks with what can be a very complicated [benefits] process and to explain to them in understandable terms the excellent benefits they have available is very rewarding.” He also gives a great deal of credit to his staff, who he says are excellent at what they do and who have helped make his transition into his new position a seamless one.

On his own time, John enjoys spending time with his wife of 25 years, Patty, his three sons, and his extended family. He is an active member of his church and enjoys working around the house during the weekends. When asked what he'd like people to know about him, John responded, “I have seen a lot of changes take place at Upstate in the past 20 years, and I like the direction we're going in. I think it’s very important to promote the vision our leadership has established, especially during these uncertain times. My work is very important to me and I find Upstate a great place to work.”

John, congratulations on your 20 years of dedicated service to Upstate and thank you for all that you do for our internal customers. You are a great representation of the Human Resources motto “Your Satisfaction is Our Success."
