Kathie Joseph

Kathleen Joseph of Patient Support Services is not only a SWAT nurse at University Hospital, but also is a student enrolled in the RN-to-MS program at SUNY Upstate Medical University’s College of Nursing. As a SWAT nurse, Kathie floats throughout the critical care areas to perform nursing functions, as well as assist the various units when needed. As described by Kathie, “It’s a busy job where I do everything and some and help wherever."
She also has the capacity to respond to Level 1 Trauma or be dispatched as part of a Rapid Response Team when necessary.

When asked what she likes best about her position, Kathie explained that being a SWAT nurse provides her with a significant amount of exposure to the various units within the hospital, along with the ability to interact with various physicians, nurses and medical staff throughout the entire hospital. As expressed by Kathie, “As a SWAT nurse you see all different views of the hospital and get to understand all aspects and functions of the job." She enjoys doing something different each day, but ultimately what she enjoys most is taking care of her patients and working with them to provide them with best care and service possible.

Outside of work and when she is not busy in school, Kathie enjoys spending time with her husband and four children ranging from the ages 3-25 years old. She has a passion for antiques and recycling, as well as enjoys snowmobiling in the winter and tending to the 50 head Angus beef farm that she owns with her husband.

When asked what she wants people to know about her, Kathie expressed that she is a strong believer in recycling and going green. She also reiterated how important the function and job of a nurse is and that nurses should be proud of what they do and be vocal about patient rights along with providing patients quality care. After 16 years as a RN, Kathie continues to love her job, especially being a SWAT nurse.

Kathie, we thank you for your commitment and dedication in caring for our patients and ensuring they receive the best care and service while at Upstate. Keep up the great work and good luck in your studies!
