Jolene Keyes, Nursing - Emergency Services is this month's Upstate 'Face'

March 2008—Jolene Keyes

Ever since Jolene Keyes was a little girl she wanted to become a nurse. Jolene was inspired by her older cousin, Valerie, who at the time was attending nursing school.  Jolene explained, “I admired and aspired to emulate her.  Valerie was beautiful, smart, funny and popular.” Her desire grew even more while caring for her grandmother who was very ill with cancer. Jolene stated, “Caring for my grandmother allowed me to deal with the cancer and I knew that I could in some way provide some comfort. It gave me great satisfaction and I knew wanted to do that for others.”

After graduating with a BSN from Syracuse University in 2004, Jolene began her RN career in our Emergency Department. On a day-to-day basis, Jolene stated, “We take care of people at their worst.  We have to be prepared for anything at anytime, often with little or no warning.”  When asked what she likes most about her job, Jolene replied, “One of my favorite parts of the job is when things get crazy, as they often do in such a dynamic environment. We pull together as a team and take great care of people.”

Outside of work, Jolene enjoys reading, traveling to her parents' camp in Old Forge and to the Cedar Point Amusement Park on the shore of Lake Erie in Ohio, and spending time with family and friends.  Currently, Jolene is planning a cruise to Europe in May. When asked what Jolene wants people to know about her, she replied, “I love what I do. I try to get the most enjoyment out of life and be as happy as possible at work and outside of work.”

Jolene, we thank you and the team in the Emergency Department for your compassion and dedication in caring for the critically ill and injured!  Continue the great work and thank you for your many contributions to our patients and Upstate!
