June 2007—Marti Benedict
Marti Benedict has spent the last nine years influencing the quality of research activities at Upstate. As the administrator of the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB) at Upstate, Marti ensures that research activities meet federal regulations and ethical standards for humans thereby protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects who volunteer to participate. Marti also presents lectures to faculty and students and serves on two other local IRB committees. In addition, she is a founding member of the State-Wide SUNY Human Subjects Forum and a member of the SUNY Human Subject Program Site Visit Team.
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Marti responded that she enjoys getting a global view of what research is going on throughout the institution and reviewing the variety of research topics. Marti also enjoys assisting faculty with questions, teaching, and working with Dr. John Lucas, Associate Vice President for Research. Marti attributes her success to Dr. Lucas because “…he has been a fabulous mentor.”
Outside of work, Marti enjoys spending time with her children and loves to travel, hoping to make it to Paris soon. When asked what she wants people to know about her, Marti replied, “Faculty and staff should feel open to access me for IRB issues and studies …I am excited about research and will help in any way to make it successful.”
Marti, your expertise in IRB administration helps to ensure Upstate’s reputation as a leading member of the global research community. Thank you for your dedication and hard work!
