"I greatly enjoy working as a Patient Service Leader because I am able to provide direct patient care, in addition to utilizing my skills and knowledge to be a resource to our patients and staff."
-Sha-Wanda White

Sha-Wanda White RN, MSN,FNP-BC, began her nursing career at Upstate University Hospital 11 years ago when she joined Unit 6A-General Medicine/Pulmonary as a nurse’s aide. She is a graduate of our College of Nursing and received her MSN in 2007 and her Post Master’s Nurse Certificate in Education in 2008. In addition to working as a Patient Service Leader (PSL) on Unit 6A, Sha-Wanda is employed as a Nurse Practitioner for the New York Heart Center.

In her current role as a PSL, Sha-Wanda is responsible for a number of functions including ensuring patient safety, quality control and functioning as a charge nurse on her scheduled shift. She serves as a resource to staff, patients and family members, as well as is the point of contact when situations arise that may require service recovery. She enjoys the clinical and leadership aspect of her position and feels very connected to her unit. When asked what she likes most about working at Upstate, Sha-Wanda replied, “I feel like I have many options and opportunities here, but I greatly enjoy working as a PSL because I am able to provide direct patient care, in addition to utilizing my skills and knowledge to be a resource to our patients and staff. I enjoy attending conferences and educational in-services, so that I may bring new information back to the staff and challenge them to think outside the box. I’ve also had the opportunity to take advantage of all the educational opportunities Upstate has to offer and find this to be a very important incentive for being employed here.”

Outside of work, Sha-Wanda spends as much time as possible with her two daughters, ages 10 and 14. She has a passion for traveling and plans as many weekend getaways as possible with her daughters. In addition, she takes a month off each summer to travel internationally. Her most recent travels included the Bahamas, Mexico and Belize.

When asked what she wants people to know about her, Sha-Wanda expressed, “I consider myself a very approachable person and I really thrive when given the opportunity to be a resource to fellow co-workers and patients. I love my job on Unit 6A and find it to be constantly challenging given the high acuity levels of the patients we encounter. This has enabled me to consistently learn. The support and flexibility I have received from my managers over the years has enabled me to go back to school and further myself as a person and a professional. As a result, I feel very dedicated to my unit and co-workers.”

Sha-Wanda, we thank you and the dedicated team on Unit 6A-General Medicine/Pulmonary for your many contributions to our patients and Upstate. In addition, congratulations on being selected as one of the recipients of the 2009 Nursing Excellence Awards!
