Hi, I'm Leah.

Welcome to the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital.

Everyone you meet here likes taking care of children and will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable and happy.

Hi, I'm Leah
Lots of kids come to the hospital all the time.

Sometimes they are sick and need medicine to make them feel better or sometimes they need surgery if a part of their body isn't working the way it should.

Let's talk about what will happen when YOU come to the hospital.

If you are spending the night...
Bring Your Favorites

...remember to pack your pajamas.

And don't forget to bring your favorite toys or stuffed animals.

On the night before your surgery...
Good Night's Sleep

... make sure you get a good night's sleep so you feel ready for your visit with us.

No eating or drinking

You will have to make sure that you don't eat or drink anything on the day of your operation.

When you come to the hospital you will go to a place called Registration.

Here your parents will get some papers and find out where to go next.

Center for Children's Surgery

Next you go to our surgery center which is just for children. A nurse will take you to your room where you will change into hospital pajamas and get onto a stretcher, which is the name for a bed on wheels.

Your parents can stay right with you.

the nurse will also check your blood pressure

You will meet a lot of people who will be taking care of you. They will answer any questions you or your parents have and tell you what you will be doing for the rest of the day.

time for your operation
going to surgery

When it is time for your operation you will go to the operating room. You can either ride on the stretcher or walk there. One of your parents may even be able to come with you until you are asleep.

The operating room has bright lights in it and different machines that help take care of you during your operation. You might feel a little bit cold so we will give you a nice warm blanket.

measuring oxygen

The nurse will put another blood pressure cuff on your arm, a sticker that wraps around your finger to measure the oxygen you are breathing in, and round stickers on your chest that will tell the doctors how your heart is beating.

Then it's time to go off to sleep for your operation.
off to sleep

It's a different kind of sleep because you won't feel anything during your operation. The doctor will help you fall asleep by having you breathe some medicine through a mask.

waking up

When you wake up, the operation will be over and you will be in a place we call the Recovery Room.

In the Recovery Room you will still have the blood pressure cuff on your arm, the sticker wrapped around your finger and the round stickers on your chest. You will also have an IV in your hand or arm. The liquid in it has some medicine to make you feel better.

Other kids may be waking up too, so it might be a little noisy. The best thing to do is rest, because soon you will be feeling better.

The doctor might even let you go home that same day. But if you need to stay overnight you will go to a nice room in an area just for kids. Your family and friends can come to visit and your mom or dad can spend the night in the room with you.
