Hospital social workers collaborate with patient care teams, and integrate the mission and core values of social work utilizing principles and standards to guide ethical decision-making. Social Workers' primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems. Upstate Medical University Social Workers are required to have a Master of Social Work degree and a New York State License (LMSW). In addition to the LMSW some Social Work Staff members have achieved a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker -R (LCSW-R) status.

  • Crisis intervention: stabalization, problem-solving, short-term counseling and referrals
  • Facilitate psychiatric placements and out-patient referrals
  • Insurance Issues
  • Limited assistance with financial concerns due to hospitalization (ie. parking)
  • Referrals for accommodations (Ronald McDonald House, hotel discounts, etc.)
  • Violence: suspected family violence including domestic violence, child abuse,/neglect and elder abuse
