Child Abuse

Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation Program (CARE)

The CARE team consists of specially trained physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and social workers who work together to search for social and medical evidence of abuse. Medical care and treatment is provided for children 18 years old or younger in a sensitive, supportive, and reassuring environment.

Services are provided at both McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Site (509 W. Onondaga St., Syracuse, NY 13204) and UHCC (see below).

• Medical abuse
• Neglect
• Physical abuse
• Sexual abuse

Clinical Services Provided

• CHAMP professional educational program
• Emotional assessment of the child
• Follow-up care, as needed
• Medical examination, including photo documentation with a colposcope and appropriate lab and x-ray tests
• Medical record documentation that can be used in court
• Referral for other treatment and/or counseling, when indicated
• Sensitive preparation of the child for the medical examination
• Social interview with the child's caretaker

Support Services Provided

• Assessment of social situation and safety of child
• Inpatient and outpatient child abuse evaluation, treatment, and referrals
• Multidisciplinary team case reviews
