Periods Offered 3 - 12 (must be arranged at least 4 weeks in advance)
Weekly Activities Daily office hours with preceptor; inpatient rounds where applicable.
Elective Description Students choose from sites throughout New York State. A number are within commuting distance of Syracuse and including managed care settings, community health centers, and private practices. Preceptorships in other states can be arranged. Students will understand the role of urban/suburban family physicians; will develop skills in the diagnosis and management of common medical problems; and will understand the nature of referrals to, and consultation with other medical specialists. Students progress from observation to initial patient contact with preceptor review. Rate of progression and participation, assignment of short literature reviews of patient problems, and night call are at the discretion of individual preceptors. Readings Suggested tests: Specific textbooks are not required. Students should read about the patients they encounter.
