SUNY Upstate Medical university Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development

Welcome to the Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development Website

Whether you are a resident or fellow considering a career in academic medicine, a new faculty member getting started who will benefit from our orientation and mentoring programs, an established faculty member interested in career advancement and honing your skills, or a seasoned faculty member interested in helping the next generation or exploring ways of contributing as you phase into retirement, we’ve designed this site with your needs in mind.

You will notice that the site is split into two parts, faculty affairs and faculty development and you might be wondering what the difference is. It is actually an arbitrary divide, faculty affairs focuses on the policy side of faculty issues (appointment, annual expectations setting, promotion and tenure, leave policies, retirement options etc) but even the forms, templates and policies you find in this part of the website will offer you the opportunity for learning and growth more commonly associated with faculty development. Certainly the clear guidance found in the promotion and tenure documents and the expectations provided to you in letters of appointment and annually by your chair should be considered forms of faculty development.

On the faculty development side of the website you will see three main areas – 1) educational development (people, tools and sessions to help you be a better teacher), 2) research development (people, tools and sessions to help you locate collaborators, find grants opportunities, write successful grants and papers and other research-related links) and 3) career development (people, tools and sessions geared at helping you achieve your goals in promotion, tenure (if applicable), service to the institution and leadership).

As of March 1, 2007, the College of Medicine adopted new standards for Promotion and Tenure, essentially eliminating the multiple-track system. Please review the new Standards for Appointments, Rank, Promotion and Tenure and Appendix A: Definitions and Examples of Scholarship and of Proficiency and Excellence in the areas of Research, Teaching and University Service in the Faculty Affairs: Promotion and Tenure section.

If you have any questions about the process, the standards or the definitions please discuss with your chair or contact the Office of Faculty Affairs at 464-1681.

We hope you visit this website often and find it useful.
